Horizon Retail Construction

Building your business on paper is one thing. Building it with bricks and mortar is an entirely different process. Finding the right general contractor to construct the physical space can lead to growth on your spreadsheets and in your bottom line.

That’s where Horizon Retail Construction comes in. With nearly three decades of experience building and renovating spaces for a wide array of clients in entertainment, health care, restaurants, concessions and retail, Horizon has the know-how to accommodate the unique needs of customer-facing businesses in an increasingly unpredictable marketplace.

“We will continually adapt to tenant growth, and we continue to think about consumer habits that change over time,” said Patrick Christensen, president of Horizon. “In the near future, we will keep focusing on health care, service retail, concessions, restaurants and retail.”

Growing through innovation

During 28 years in business, Horizon has seen changes in what consumers expect and has responded by helping its clients meet those needs. Recent big retail projects have included the construction of a flagship New York store for Warby Parker.

“We’re proud of our relationship with Warby Parker,” Christensen said. “It was exciting to build that flagship location in Rockefeller Center, one of the city’s most historic buildings.”

Even working with a company like Warby Parker, which originally started as an online-only retailer, shows that Horizon and its clients know how to adapt to market conditions. In the future, Horizon will continue to collaborate with landlords and tenants to meet the needs of the client and future consumer.

“We have shown the ability to quickly adapt to tenant needs,” Christensen said.

A bright future

Horizon has grown its footprint and workforce in recent years. The company did more than 1,500 buildouts over the past year and boasts a team of 200 construction superintendents, all of whom are Horizon employees.

The company has also worked to respond quickly to demand, making the typically arduous waiting period for beginning a project minimal. In some instances, a project can be staffed and ready to begin within a week of Horizon winning the bid. Christensen believes that the company’s ability to “mobilize rapidly” is another one of its standout attributes.

The future also means building on the vision for the company that was founded in 1993.

“Our focus is training and grooming future leaders and new executives — people that have the same vision as those at the start of the company,” Christensen said.

That focus is evident in a growing internship program that has helped 11 local young professionals gain general contracting and project management experience. Christensen and Horizon have also shown a commitment to the community it serves, working with non-profit organizations in the Racine area.

“We are proud of the first 28 years, the relationships we have built with clients and the growth of the company with the addition of great employees along the way,” Christensen said. “We are excited for what the future brings and to continue our great relationships with our clients.”
