A four-run second inning gave the Racine Lutheran-Prairie high school baseball team the cushion it needed to continue its hot streak and defeat Whitewater 7-5 Tuesday in a WIAA Division 2 quarterfinal game at Horlick Field.
The No. 4 seed LPs, who have won 13 of 15 games, advabce to a semifinal against No. 1 Jefferson at Jefferson today at 4:45 p.m.
Whitewater took a 3-2 lead with a run in the top of the second inning. But Lutheran-Prairie (15-7) responded in the bottom of the inning by sending nine batters to the plate. Junior Tucker Maris and freshman Trey Eckert each contributed a two-run single to give the LPs a 6-3 lead.
Junior pitcher Reid Heinert pitched six innings with three strikeouts. He also drove in a run. Senior Jordan Ganther came in relief in the seventh and earned the save, ending the game with a 1-6-3 double play.
“We’re just going to get out there and play from here on out,” LPs coach Bob Mallwitz said. “Records go out the window at this point and we will just focus on winning.”
