The Racine Lutheran-Prairie high school baseball team just missed grabbing a piece of the Metro Classic Conference championship Friday, losing to Dominican 5-2 at Horlick Field.

The LPs could have tied Milwaukee Saint Thomas More for the conference championship with a win, but Dominican broke open a close game with a run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.

“It just wasn’t our day today,” said LPs coach Bob Mallwitz. “We had our chances, but we couldn’t capitalize on them. I’m extremely proud of what this team did this season. Now, we have to move on to the playoffs.”

The LPs (14-7, 11-3 MCC) started the season 2-5, but won 12 of their last 14 games. On Friday, sophomore David Reske (2-1) pitched five strong innings and left with Lutheran-Prairie trailing 2-1. The Knights (11-6, 10-4 MCC) made it 3-1 in the sixth, but Lutheran cut it to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth.

Junior Tucker Maris went 2 for 3 with a double and scored both runs for the LPs.
