The Park High School girls soccer team matched its victory total from each of the past two seasons Thursday, dominating Wilmot for a 5-1 nonconference victory in a battle of Panthers’ teams at Wilmot.

Park coach Matt Maletis said his Panthers controlled play throughout the match, which was switched from Pershing Park to Wilmot’s artificial turf field.

Freshman Mikayla Smith scored unassisted in the 17th minute to open the scoring for Park (2-2) and sophomore Devynn Gruender followed four minutes later with the second goal, assisted by freshman Alexis Betker.

Freshman Lainie Sanders scored her first high school goal, also assisted by Betker, in the 33rd minute, to give Park a 3-0 lead at the half.

“We did some nice things,” Maletis said. “Devynn Gruender made things go in the middle; she played a very solid game.”

Betker added goals in the 58th (Gruender assist) and 62nd minutes (Sanders assist) to make it 5-0. Wilmot scored in the 82nd minute to avert the shutout.

Freshman Genesis Thompkins (seven saves) and senior Sophia Bernard (three) split time in goal.
