The Catholic Central High School softball team finally got in its season opener Saturday, but came up just short.
After taking a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lady Toppers couldn’t hold off Johnson Creek, which scored twice in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 nonconference victory at Johnson Creek.
Catholic Central scored three runs in the first inning and added its fourth run in the top of the fourth against a Johnson Creek team that went 20-6 last year and reached the WIAA Division 4 sectional semifinals.
Sydney Robson threw 6⅓ innings and allowed nine hits, struck out eight and walked two for the Lady Toppers. In the bottom of the seventh, Johnson Creek hit a game-winning single with one out.
Robson and Izzy Phillips both singled and Christina Paleka tripled for Catholic Central’s hits in the game.
MADISON EAST 4, CASE 1: The Eagles trailed 3-0 at the half and weren’t able to recover in a nonconference loss at Breese Stevens Field in Madison.
Marija Markovic scored the goal for Case (1-1) on an assist by Anna Butler in the 85th minute, and Natalie Carbajal had 15 saves in goal for the Eagles.
PRAIRIE: The Hawks lost both of their dual meets on the second day of the University School of Milwaukee Invitational at the Moorland Tennis Club in New Berlin.
Prairie (1-3) lost to University School of Milwaukee and Brookfield Academy, both by 6-1 scores.
No. 4 singles player Nick Ruffo beat Taha Beg 6-0, 6-4 for the Hawks’ victory against USM, and No. 2 singles player Wesley Eaton beat Rohan Nangia 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 for the victory against Brookfield Academy.
