The Catholic Central High School softball team finally got in its season opener Saturday, but came up just short.

After taking a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lady Toppers couldn’t hold off Johnson Creek, which scored twice in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 nonconference victory at Johnson Creek.

Catholic Central scored three runs in the first inning and added its fourth run in the top of the fourth against a Johnson Creek team that went 20-6 last year and reached the WIAA Division 4 sectional semifinals.

Sydney Robson threw 6⅓ innings and allowed nine hits, struck out eight and walked two for the Lady Toppers. In the bottom of the seventh, Johnson Creek hit a game-winning single with one out.

Robson and Izzy Phillips both singled and Christina Paleka tripled for Catholic Central’s hits in the game.
