The evening began pretty well for the Burlington High School football team Friday. Unfortunately, it didn’t last.

The Demons led 14-0 midway through the first quarter and 21-14 early in the second quarter, but Badger turned the game around in a heartbeat, scored 36 straight points and beat Burlington 50-28 in a Southern Lakes Conference game at Lake Geneva.

"We made some mistakes," Burlington coach Steve Tenhagen said. "We had 440 yards of offense to their 319, but we had four turnovers and gave up two kickoff returns for touchdowns."

Nick Klug, who had been limited by a leg injury in the second and third games of the season, and the Demons came out hot. Klug hit Joe Tully for a 59-yard touchdown pass just 1:02 into the game. About five minutes later, Grant Tully, Joe's cousin, ran for a 35-yard score and a 14-0 lead for Burlington (2-2, 1-1 SLC).

Badger scored 18 seconds later on a 25-yard touchdown run by Colton Surges, then tied the game with 4:35 left in the first quarter when Nicholas Aufmuth intercepted Klug and ran it back for a touchdown.

The Demons scored on the first play of the second quarter on Klug’s 38-yard run, but that would be all of the scoring for Burlington until early in the fourth quarter.

The Badgers’ Will Keller returned the ensuing kickoff for 84 yards and a touchdown to tie the game. Badger scored two more times late in the first half, both on touchdown passes by Surges — his only two completions of the game.

Burlington finally scored again at 11:07 of the fourth quarter, on a 6-yard pass from Klug to Nick Webley.

Burlington outgained Badger (3-1, 2-0) 440-319, including 245-31 through the air. Grant Tully ran nine times for 88 yards and Klug ran 14 times for 74 yards. Klug was 15 of 27 passing, and Joe Tully caught five passes for 114 yards.

"I was happy with how our kids battled," Tenhagen said. "We just have to clean up those mistakes. They've been a constant for us the last several weeks. We know we can't make mistakes against good football teams."
