Amanda Johnson had a strategy and she followed it.

The Park High School senior overtook Hollie Poehler of Oak Creek in the final 400 meters to win the girls race in the Muskego Warrior Cross Country Invitational Saturday at Lake Denoon Middle School.

Johnson covered the 5,000-meter course in 19:22.75, finishing just ahead of Poehler (19:23.29). The time was just off her personal best.

“Amanda was leading the first mile and a half and then the Oak Creek girl overtook her,” said Park coach Glenn Schultz, who had an incomplete team. “But Amanda sat back and then she ran a great last 400 meters. It was really a gutty performance.”

Waterford was seventh in the 15-team meet (223) and Horlick was 13th (320).

The highest Racine County finisher after Johnson was Sydney Pitrof (15th, 20:40) of Horlick. Waterford was led by Gabby Bergeron (26th, 21:27).

In the 16-team boys meet, Park was ninth (210), Waterford was 10th (228) and Horlick was 15th (407).

Myles Brown of Park was the top county finisher, placing 12th (17:00). Park’s Philip Wilson (19th, 17:10) medaled for the second straight meet. Trent Rudebeck led Waterford (27th, 17:31) and Josh Crowe led Horlick (62nd, 18:14).
