Mari Suokko and her Union Grove High School girls golf teammates Thursday did even better than last year in the Taylor Clark Memorial Invitational.
Despite windy, cool and sometimes rainy conditions at Brighton Dale Links in Brighton, the Broncos totaled 363 and defended their team title, and Suokko shot a 79 on the Blue Spruce course to win the individual title for the second straight year.
The team’s total was six strokes better than last year, the first year of the tournament, and Suokko’s total was two strokes better.
Prairie finished second at 373, Waterford was third at 400 and Burlington was fifth at 425.
Suokko, a senior, had plenty of help in leading the Broncos. Junior Sarah Schuster finished third with an 83 and sophomore Megan Koch was 10th with a 97.
“Overall, we did a very good job,” Union Grove coach Eric Swanson said. “Mari was exceptional, as was Sarah. Today's conditions were tough, and both Mari and Sarah handled these conditions really well.”
Prairie also had three players in the top 10, led by junior Rachel Gentile, who was fourth with an 86. Sophomore Kate Monroe was seventh with a 93 and junior Olivia Scumaci was ninth with a 95.
Waterford’s top player was junior Taitum Beck, who shot an 82 to finish second. Burlington was led by sophomore Raelee Koehnke, who shot a 100.
