UW-Parkside’s Armando Torres turned in an impressive performance in the Vic Godfrey Open on Saturday.

Torres won the men’s eight-kilometer race on the Dannehl National Cross Country Course in Somers. He was timed at 25 minutes, 4 seconds. That was 10 seconds faster than the time posted by runner-up Daniel Pederson of Marquette University.

Torres’ winning effort helped Parkside finish third with 94 points in the 12-team men’s meet. Marquette was first with 27 points, with De Paul finishing second with 74.

Parkside’s Trevor Legg finished 12th in 26:05.

Parkside finished ninth in the women’s portion of the meet. The Rangers had 230 points. Marquette was first with 28, followed by Northern Michigan with 84 and the University of Chicago with 99.

The Rangers’ top finisher was Rebecca Jasutis, who finished 43rd with a time of 19:30 in the five-kilometer race. Marquette’s Jessica Parker was first at 17:47, and her teammate Jennifer Parker was second at 17:51.

Men’s soccer

CARTHAGE: Kevin Mahoney led the Red Men to victory on Friday.

Mahoney scored the first goal of the match in Carthage’s 2-1 nonconference triumph at Kenosha.

After a scoreless first half, Mahoney scored on a penalty at 56:34. Carthage (3-0) then took a 2-0 lead on an own goal at 66:45.

Niko Mavrogiannis was in goal for the Red Men and had one save.
