Senior Danielle Noverini scored two goals and the Carthage College women’s soccer team earned its first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin victory of the season, beating North Park 3-0 Wednesday at the Holmgren Athletic Complex in Chicago.
The well-rested Lady Reds (8-5, 1-2 CCIW), who hadn’t played in a week, took control early when Noverini scored 42 seconds into the game. Noverini gained possession in a wide-open field and fired a 15-foot shot to North Park goalkeeper’s Sydney Martinez’s left.
Carthage made it 2-0 at 11:19. Taylor Stenmark scored from 20 yards out off an assist by Anna McHatton.
Noverini scored at 68:30 off an assist by Brittany Lee for the final goal of the game.
Emily Furmanek made seven saves in goal to earn the shutout for Carthage.
North Park (6-7-1, 0-5-1 CCIW) was led by Marina Barrios, who had three shots on goal.
CARTHAGE: Senior Max Mella was selected the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.
Mella went 4-0 in two CCIW matches, playing No. 2 singles and teaming with Angelica Emmanouil at No. 1 doubles in wins against Illinois Wesleyan and Millikin.
WHITEWATER: Junior Breanna Bertschinger helped the UW-Whitewater golf team win its third Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and first since 1999.
The Warhawks scored a WIAC meet record 942 in the tournament at Reedsburg Country Club. By winning the conference championship, Whitewater earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship May 8-11 at Mission Hills Resort Golf Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
Bertschinger, a former standout at Waterford High School, shot 319 (115-101-103) to finish 51st overall. Sophomore teammates CheyAnn Knudsen (80-75-78—233) and Ashley Hofmeister (79-80-75—234) finished first and second, respectively, in the 54-hole tournament.
