About 64 years ago Congress modified the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag by the addition of the words “under God.” Since then Congressional actions and inactions would suggest that the words “under Guns” are more appropriate.

The great majority of the populace wants there to be reasonable gun control in order to alleviate this tremendous public health hazard but, apparently, our present federal and many state governments controlled by the gun industry and NRA are not allowed to take even the simplest actions. Our unenlightened president has made suggestions that are most unhelpful. Sad.

Some years ago when machine gun-type weapons appeared in Chicago, Mike Royko referred to them as street sweepers. The gun industry and NRA encourage the proliferation of such military armaments throughout our society, which is not in the interest of public health. The Second Amendment is outdated and not needed, because the militias to which it refers are unnecessary. However, there is little chance of repealing that amendment, since there are too many “red” states, 38 being needed for repeal.

The Supreme Court has ruled that it is OK to own and bear arms, but did not state what arms and by whom. In the 18th century the arms were single-shot flint-lock muzzle-loaders. There is nothing to prevent the federal and various state and local governments from defining or limiting the types of arms allowed, except for the control exerted by the gun industry and NRA on many politicians. In order to eliminate street sweepers and have rational gun regulations our only hope is to be sure to elect people who are concerned about the public and are not beholden to the gun lobby.
