I was very disappointed in the nine members of the Racine Common Council who decided to shirk their duty by skipping the July 3 meeting at City Hall.
Look, I get it. You don't want to work late on the night before Independence Day. I was in favor of the mayor's suggestion that the July 3 meeting be cancelled. Unfortunately, that particular measure failed. That means every member should have been in attendance.
You owe it to your constituents and to the taxpayers of Racine to be present at every single meeting, which you are physically able to attend. We elect you to represent us at all times, not just when you feel like it.
And just as a parting suggestion to two councilmembers in particular: if you're not going to attend a meeting on July 3, you probably shouldn't walk in a parade on July 4. It doesn't make for great optics.
