Modernizing trade deals from time to time isn’t a bad thing. However, rhetoric being thrown around Washington about withdrawing from the North American Free Trade Agreement should scare everyone in Wisconsin.
What most don’t realize is that nearly 50 percent of Wisconsin’s exports go to Canada and Mexico. That number is actually above 50 percent when you look at just agriculture. NAFTA also accounts for roughly a quarter-million jobs in our state.
In a state known for farming and manufacturing, it’s hard to think of something that would devastate our state’s two trademark industries more than pulling out of NAFTA.
As the rhetoric around trade heats up in Washington, talks of modernizing trade deals is a good thing. But while modernizing can help Wisconsin’s economy, we must not lose sight of what these trade deals mean for Wisconsin. We cannot, and must not, withdraw from NAFTA.
