The conservative choke hold on government has tightened, the twist being the underhanded means that injected Judge Gorsuch onto the court against the voters' express wishes — almost 3 million votes worth.
Conservatives arrogantly insist that only conservative jurists apply constitutional standards while all others are "activists." Charging opponents with their own sins undermines their argument. No court has been more constitutionally heedless as the pack of supreme extremists currently in the majority. Its partisan dogma solidifies the present minority right-wing administration.
Conservative jurists, without precedent, intervened in the 2000 election making the loser (Bush) president. His partisan appointees bent the Constitution repeatedly for partisan ends, surrendering to scorched-earth conservatism notably in Citizens United, giving corporations the rights of individuals. Dark money and tea-party rage has auctioned off government ever since.
Activist conservatives gutted the Voting Rights Act, approved public money for religious schools and more (all constitutionally destructive) in the name of "original intent," knowledge they're sure only they possess.
Truthfully, all judges "make" law. They interpret and rule on the constitutionality of legislation and executive action. Whether upholding or striking down, they shape law. Conservatives, however, narrowly interpret (to their advantage) a deliberately flexible document while lecturing us on liberty (insisting on their own definitions).
Every manacle on mankind is conservatism declaring itself inerrant, deciding whose privileges count the most, who must stay in his place and why money is more honorable than justice. It rejects the common good and imperils our democracy.
