By Anna Davlantes Journal Times and Knight-Ridder News Service Crowds waited anxiously at the steps of the grand Palais in Cannes, France, last Monday for appearance of sultry rocker Madonna.
It was the climactic moment of the Cannes International Film Festival, where Madonna was to debut her film "Truth or Dare."
But when a silver stretch limousine pulled up outside the Palais and a French announcer roared, "And, here's Madonna!" it was native Racinian Cathy Gubin who stepped out.
Gubin, 37, is a radio journalist who covers the movie industry as part of her job at a national radio bureau in France.
Madonna arrived shortly after the comedy of errors in a similar limousine.
Gubin lived in Racine until she moved to Milwaukee for college. From there, she held several newspaper and magazine jobs in the Midwest and in Texas and then took a job with Voice of America radio show in France, where she has worked for the past five years.
Her mother, also Cathy Gubin, of 2000 Rupert Blvd., read about the incident Tuesday. "It was a real shock to me," she said.
