MOUNT PLEASANT — Rescue crews responded Thursday afternoon to 637 South Green Bay Road after receiving a report of smoke in the apartment building.
Jasmine Carslick came home to the apartment complex after picking up her son from school around 3 p.m and smelled smoke. She then noticed smoke was coming out of the basement and called 911. The dispatcher told her to pull the fire alarm so residents would clear the building.
South Shore Fire Department Battalion Chief John Radewan said the smoke came from the electrical panel for the fire alarm system. Fire officials turned off the electricity to the panel and offered to help resident check their personal smoke alarms so they could return to their homes.
