RACINE - The city will stay with the current management company of the Racine Civic Centre despite some opposition.
The three-year contract was awarded to VenuWorks, the management company for Racine Civic Centre, which currently operates Festival Hall, Festival Park and Memorial Hall. The management fee will be $70,000 for 2012, same as 2011. That will be adjusted annually by the consumer price index. The city can extend the contract for another two years at its discretion.
The City Council approved the contract Tuesday night in a 12-2 vote, with aldermen Eric Marcus and Melissa Kaprelian-Becker dissenting.

Marcus argued against it, wanting to bid it out like the city did with the North Beach Oasis management contract when it was up for renewal after 10 years. He said the council should send out a request for proposals like the city did with the Oasis contract to see what new ideas or vendors were out there, especially in a time when "every dollar counts."
Kaprelian-Becker said she dissented for sake of consistency.
Supporters of the VenuWorks contract said such decisions are up to the city's discretion and argued it wasn't the time for "trial and error" when the centre management was going well and it was costing the city's taxpayers less and less to subsidize its operations.
