RACINE COUNTY — A driver for the former Racine Yellow Cab has opened his own taxi service here, Racine Taxi.

Omar Nirman is starting his business as the only driver and with a single vehicle — a five-passenger cab. But he hopes to add drivers and vehicles as the business grows.

Racine Taxi, based at 1509 Rapids Drive, is available every day around the clock, Nirman said. He will pick up customers countywide and not start charging until the customer is in the cab.

Based on his past taxi driving experience, Nirman said typical kinds of taxi use here includes bringing SC Johnson clients from the Amtrak station to the company headquarters at 1525 Howe St., taking people to General Mitchell International Airport, driving them home from bars, and taking people to grocery stores, laundromats and other shopping destinations.

Racine Taxi charges $2.75 to start the meter running plus 25 cents for every one-tenth mile. Credit cards are accepted on board.
