CRIVITZ—(formerly of Mount Pleasant) – Charles T. “Charlie” May, age 95, passed away peacefully at NEWCare Nursing Home in Crivitz, WI on Wednesday evening, July 4, 2018.
Charlie was born in Burlington, WI on April 1, 1923 to the late Henry and Marie (nee: Frey) May. He faithfully served our country with the United States Army in WWII from 1943-46. He was proud to have fought for Our Freedom and He loved Our Country. Proudly, he annually wore his original uniform to his church Veterans Day services. On September 6, 1947, he was united in marriage with Audrey G. (nee: Mohrbacher) May, who preceded him in death on March 10, 2003.
He was employed at Massey-Harris 10+ years and Twin Disc for 28 years, retiring in 1985. He spent many hours doing odd jobs for anyone who asked. He was happiest when he was helping out family, a neighbor, a friend or a stranger who quickly became a friend. In lieu of money he always said “I work for Food”. The microwave was his best friend. He enjoyed helping everyone he came in contact with. He was a man of honor and integrity who loved his family deeply. He always had a story to tell and had an unforgettable sense of humor.
He was an outgoing and devoted member of Saint Lucy Catholic Church. He was an amazing woodworker spending hours in his Doghouse building and handcrafting many items. He shared many of his creations with his family & friends and donated many to his Church. He was a huge Harley Davidson enthusiast and owned a 1946 Harley-Davidson, which he purchased when he came out of the service in 1946. He rode it in many parades over the years and took his last ride on it when he was 91.
Charlie loved traveling with his wife in their Suburban and travel trailer and did many family vacations across the country. Florida was their popular winter destination. He loved spending summertime up north, which became his home in his remaining years. He was a huge camera buff and never left home without one in his pocket. He left many wonderful memories through his picture taking. He loved dogs and always carried treats in his pocket in case he came across a friendly pup.
Surviving are his children, John May, Thomas (Terri) May, Charles May and Theresa Gergan; grandchildren, Adam, Thomas Jr. (Holly), Matthew and Lindsey (Steven) May; Kassandra (Kyle) Brotzman, Chandra LaRue and Lisa (Scott) Hauser; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Savannah, Deleilah, Freyah, Rochelle (Sergio), Ryan, Brandon, Ashleigh (Drew), Alex, Noah & Trinity; great great –grandchildren, Lukas, Logan and Jaelyn; nieces, nephews, many other relatives, Braun Road family, church family and friends – including his Up North Friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, Charlie was preceded in death by his son, Richard May and by 6 brothers, Harold, Al, Floyd, Clarence, Herman and Ken and a sister, Dorothy.
Visitation will be at Saint Lucy Catholic Church, 3101 Drexel Avenue, Racine on Saturday, July 14, 2018 from 9:30 – 10:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 following visitation with Rev. Javier Guativa officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery – Highway 32, Racine.
A Celebration of Charlie’s Life will be held at Riverside Inn, Crivitz, WI on Sunday, July 15th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Memorials to St. Lucy Catholic Church or The WI Patriot Guard Riders 148 Kings Court Dodgeville, WI 53533 have been suggested.
