School choice fair set for parents of middle-schoolers

RACINE — In preparation for the 2018-19 school year, the Racine Unified School District will hold “My School. My Choice” fair for parents of middle school students from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Starbuck Middle School, 1516 Ohio St. Parents now have the opportunity to match their child with the school that they feel best fits them.

Families will the have the opportunity to meet school teachers, staff and principals, learn about unique programming and after-school activities, watch student performances and ask questions. Families interested will be able to apply for the school of their choice, including Gifford, Jerstad-Agerholm, Mitchell, Gilmore Fine Arts, Starbuck, Walden and the REAL schools.

Magnet school orientation is Wednesday, Thursday

RACINE — Magnet school orientation, open to all families interested in enrolling, will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at Jefferson Lighthouse Elementary School, 1722 W. Sixth St.

Jefferson Lighthouse is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. It was one of the first four schools authorized as an IB Primary Years Programme in Wisconsin.

The school focuses on higher-level thinking and problem-solving skills. Students learn a second language (Spanish). All teachers collaborate weekly to develop rigorous, student-centered curriculum and instruction methods. Students are encouraged to think about the larger world around them. Specialists reinforce what students are learning in their classroom. Students prepare for the IB opportunities that await them at McKinley Middle School and Case High School which have IB diploma programs.

RLHS to present a service of lessons and carols

RACINE — Racine Lutheran High School music program students will present the annual Christmas concert, a service of lessons and carols, at 7 p.m.Friday, Dec. 8, at the school, 251 Luedtke Ave. The Racine Lutheran High School Brass Ensemble will provide pre-concert music beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Commons area.

The concert will feature the Racine Lutheran High School Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Concert Band and Handbell Ensemble plus the grade school Beginner and Symphonic bands. After the service, a time of fellowship and refreshments will be shared in the Dining Hall.

An offering will be accepted at the conclusion of the service.

Starbuck Middle School to host holiday fair

RACINE — A holiday fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Starbuck Middle School, 1516 Ohio St.

Bowling for a Field fundraising event planned

MOUNT PLEASANT — The new Case High School baseball field 9-pin fundraising event “Bowling for a Field” will begin at noon on Saturday, Dec. 9, at The Lanes, 6501 Washington Ave.

This fundraising event will help the Case High School baseball team create a field of dreams. The event will include raffle baskets, top bowler prizes, a 50/50 raffle. Case High School baseball gear will also be available.

Gifford Planetarium to offer ‘Season of Light’ program

CALEDONIA — The program “Season of Light” will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 12 and 13, in the Planetarium at Gifford Elementary School, 8332 Northwestern Ave.

This presentation traces the history and development of many of the world’s most endearing holiday customs, all of which involve lighting up the winter season — from the burning yule log, festive Christmas tree lights and sparkling candles in windows, to the lighting of luminarias while setting off fireworks in the American Southwest and the traditional ritual lighting of the Hanukkah menorah.
