RACINE — The deadline for entry into the Racine Symphony Orchestra’s annual Young Artists’ Competition is Friday. Music students in grades nine to 12 who play an orchestral instrument or the piano are invited to apply. Applicants must be from Racine or Kenosha counties or be the student of an orchestra member.
The competition will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at First Presbyterian Church, 716 College Ave. The top three finishers will receive a total of nearly $2,000 in scholarship cash. In addition, the top finisher will be invited to perform an encore of their solo piece with the Racine Symphony Orchestra at its April 25 masterworks concert, “A Composition in Time,” at the Racine Theatre Guild, 2519 Northwestern Ave. Spectators may attend the competition at no charge.
Additionally, all participants in the Young Artists’ Competition will be considered for the limited number of slots available for the RSO Side by Side Youth Invitational. This annual program provides each participant the unique experience of a week of mentorship by one of the RSO’s professional musicians. They will rehearse together and then perform side by side at the April 25 masterworks.
