WIND POINT - Mayor John Dickert has joined the fight to bring a newer, better light to the Wind Point Lighthouse.
Dickert and other area officials have petitioned the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., to replace the Wind Point Lighthouse's current Vega VRB-25 light with an Aero Beacon DCB-24R light, which was used in the lighthouse without incident for 35 years until 2007 when the Coast Guard replaced it with the Vega. Those area officials say the Vega is too dim, has limited rotation and flashes incorrectly, all things the Racine County Sheriff's Department considers safety hazards, especially for water rescues.
That's why Dickert wrote a letter June 4 to Ryan requesting his help in changing the light.
In the letter Dickert writes the Vega light "does not meet the life saving requirements" and that recent Coast Guard efforts to improve the light have not been effective.
Dickert's letter is one of at least six that have been written since the Vega was installed. Other letters have come from the Racine County Sheriff's Department, the City of Racine Harbor Commission, the Village of Wind Point and the State of Wisconsin Waterways Commission and have gone to various levels of the Coast Guard and to Ryan.
