Remember the days of childhood, finding lost treasures in places thought to be hidden?
The Racine Revitalization Partnership (RRP) is inviting the public to rediscover the Treasures of Uptown from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30. The event will bring together nonprofits and area businesses to host a street festival that will include local entertainment featuring folk musician Naomi Marie and dance performances by Guy Singer Dance Studio, food from local restaurants, food trucks, a car show, children’s activities and a bounce house.
Treasures of Uptown will also feature the Bonk! Sponsored 100 Thousand Poets for Change. The 100 Thousand Poets for Change will culminate the Treasures event with poetry readings and musical entertainment concerns itself with social, environmental, and political change at the gallery space located at 1504 Washington Ave. beginning at 6 p.m.
Include yourself in the revitalization of the Uptown neighborhood by visiting art galleries and discovering available retail space unrestricted to possibilities. Crucially, Treasures of Uptown will open doors to the unique curiosities offered by local merchants and allow the community to partake in restoring a treasure, long thought to be hidden.
The Vital Art Project
Racine’s Uptown will also celebrate the opening of RevitalizeRacine. The Vital Art Project during the Treasures of Uptown Festival, Sept. 30. The art project, shaped by the collaborative efforts of artists, organizers, and community, will highlight the work of an estimated thirty artists from Illinois and Wisconsin and will continue as a month long visual feast, Sept. 30-Oct. 31.
In recognizing the unique position of Uptown and opportunities it offers an emerging artist population, 9,000 square feet has been designated as temporary exhibition space. Five sites in the 1300 through 1500 blocks of Washington Avenue are currently being prepared to display painting, sculpture, photography, and prints in a professionally designed and mounted exhibition. The Vital Art Project is the opus of Mimi Peterson, and is spearhead by the RRP.
Racine Revitalization Partnership Inc.
The Racine Revitalization Partnership Inc. is a collaborative nonprofit Community Development Corp. (CDC) and a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO). Its mission is to build a better Racine through the social, physical and economic revitalization of our neighborhoods. While the organization is chartered to serve all of Racine County, its initial focus was determined to be Uptown Racine.
Utilizing the Uptown Neighborhood Strategic Development Plan, in coordination with the Uptown Business Improvement District (BID) and the City of Racine, the RRP will become the catalyst for economic and community development by creating a place-based neighborhood that engages residents and businesses in the meaningful work of uniting the community. Strengthening neighborhoods will provide employment opportunities, housing, and commerce that supports a healthy and vibrant neighborhood.
In addition to Treasures of Uptown, RRP hosted National Night Out event with Salvation Army, free homebuyer education classes sponsored by Johnson Bank and Housing Resources Inc. for Uptown area residents, and they have begun redevelopment activities at 1418 Washington Ave., a mixed-use building including residential and commercial.
