Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stewart of 2001 Orchard St. celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary April 12.
Stewart and the former Floydie Mayfield were married on April 12, 1953, in Racine.
The couple met at a relative’s home and went on their first date a few months later.
Stewart has lived in Racine for 70 years, and Mrs. Stewart since she was 8 years old.
Stewart, 88, served in the U.S. Army.
He was employed by SC Johnson for 23 years, and the Racine Unified School District for 20 years, retiring in 1991.
Stewart enjoyed golfing, motorcycling and yard work.
Mrs. Stewart, 82, was employed by American Motors Corp. for 30 years. She was then a greeter at Chick-Fil-A for 10 years.
Mrs. Stewart enjoyed babysitting and spending time with family.
The Stewarts said that love is what has kept them together all these years. They said their happiest moments together was when their children were born.
The couple are members of St. Paul Baptist Church.
They have three sons: Phillip of Milwaukee, and David (Shirley) and Jeff (Yvette) of Racine. They have 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Their advice to young people getting married today: “Make sure you understand your marriage is a partnership.”
