Mr. and Mrs. Howard Schilke of 2105 Rupert Blvd. will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary with family.
Schilke and the former Gloria Hahn were married on May 16, 1953, in Trinity Lutheran Church, Racine.
The Racine natives are graduates of Park High School and went on a blind date which was set up by Schilke’s cousin. They went out to dinner on their first date.
Schilke, 90, served two years in the U.S. Navy during World War II and later graduated from Spencerian College.
He was employed as manager at the Racine Business Center for 45 years, retiring in 1992.
Schilke’s hobbies include biking, cross country skiing, ice skating and long distance walking, all of which he still does. He served as an usher and on various committees including chairman of Church Council, Board of Elders and is still active on church finance committee at First Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Schilke, 88, was employed by Wisconsin Telephone Co., Western Printing Co. Inc. and during later years at the Schoone Law Firm, retiring in 1991.
She has served as chairman of the Altar Guild for many years and was a member of the Ladies Aid for 65 years at First Evangelical Lutheran Church. She enjoyed bowling, and met regularly for 70 years with her high school friends in a sewing club and, until recently, met regularly with elementary school girlfriends.
The couple said that love, patience and respect for each other is what has kept them together all these years.
They said their happiest moments together was the birth of their children, grandchildren, and great vacations with family and friends.
Schilke is a lifetime member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church; Mrs. Schilke has been a member since 1953.
The couple has two children: Lynne (Daniel) Matthews of Oak Creek and David (Patti) of Somers. They have three grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
