15th annual Tongue Twister Contest

Audience members & participants are welcome to come listen or take part in a Tongue Twister Contest. How many silly, no-sense, funny phrases, can you say within 10 seconds without twisting your tongue?

Spectators and participants at the 15th annual Tongue Twister Contest at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, will understand why laughter is promised for both audience and participants.  The unique contest is held in downtown historic Burlington, Wisconsin. Doors open at 1:45 pm for the 2 pm contest.

"Contestants will win prizes, but all audience members also receive a prize as they are a most important part of the event," commented Judith Schulz, event founder.

Continue your smiling," said Schulz, " because the contestants can win such wonderful and appropriate prizes as a "portion of a peck of pickled peppers," "spinning store tops," and "sea shells you can sell" or maybe a “rubber baby buggy bumper!"  All of these items are the nouns that tongue twisters are made of.

The contest's tongue twisters are not given out ahead of time, "because we are a little afraid someone will get laryngitis repeating these funny phrases or suffer insomnia from all night practicing!" remarked Schulz, with a bit of a grin.  Tongue twisters are a unique category of fun and funny puzzles. The contest has divisions for children, teens, and adult, plus an international division using other languages.

Grandpas and grandmas, kids, families, aunts, cousins, friends, and even grown-ups can all enjoy this event together.

In past years Hollywood TV shows have called about the Tongue Twister Contest and Real Simple Magazine included it in a family feature issue.   National Public Radio covered the 2013 contest by interviewing the division winners, which aired on the national radio program  “Weekend Edition Sunday” with host Rachel Martin.

Tongue twisters have been used as a hiccup cure, for radio announcers to practice, and for pronunciation practice in grammar schools at least since the 1600's in England.

The audience will also be treated to a few old fashioned parlor tricks for an extra smile, plus they learn how to do this trick to use with their friends and family in the future.

Admission to the Tongue Twister Contest is $6 per person, all ages, and children must be with an adult. The event is open to people ages 6 and older.

Important advice given by the museum is “Don't be late, the contest is over quickly.”

The gift shop will be open before and after the contest, with many fun and funny items, tongue twister posters, classic toys and gizmos for children and grown-ups.         .
