CALEDONIA — If it seems a bit brighter at night outside Greentree Centre, the shopping center at 5111-5141 Douglas Ave., you are not imagining things.

The shopping center, which includes Kmart and Pick ‘n Save, has replaced all of its parking lot light fixtures with Cree LED lighting and fixtures manufactured at 9201 Washington Ave. in Sturtevant.

The Cree OSQ lights replaced the shopping center’s metal halide fixtures, some of which were 1,000-watt lights and some 400-watt lights, said Eric Milz, Cree vice president of product marketing, outdoor lighting.

Milz said only 24 Cree light fixtures were needed to replace 42 metal halides. And the new lights will reduce electrical usage by an expected 87 percent per year, according to the manufacturer. Milz said the amount of energy saved would be enough to power about 20 electric vehicles for a year.

Cree is highlighting this project, Milz explained, because the company recently expanded its OSQ product portfolio to much higher output levels, and this is one of the first such installations in the Racine area. Each of the lights installed at Greentree shines about 40,000 lumens of light.

The Greentree lighting system has capabilities such as scheduled run time, dimming, precise energy metering of each fixture and alerts for power losses or fixture problems. And the cloud-based system ensures that the shopping center’s maintenance team can run the controls remotely.
