UPtown offers Many Grant oPPortUnities for new and existinG BUsinesses The Uptown Business Improvement District (BID) has created various grant programs to incentivize and leverage investment within the district. These programs are primarily funded through special assessments paid by the property owners themselves. The Uptown BID Board of Directors has an obligation to the 130 property owners to invest in good, stable and financially feasible projects that will improve the appearance and curb appeal of commercial buildings within Uptown and stimulate economic performance, attract new investment, and inspire community pride. The City of Racine also funds Façade Improvement grants that commercial buildings within Uptown may qualify for. Over $35,000 in grants are ar available. UPTOWN DESIGN SERVICES GRANT This grant was created by the Uptown BID to help property owners within in the district with design service needs in preparation of a façade improvement. If you have the desire to improve your property, but find it difficult to get your ideas into actions, you may benefit from the help of an architect or design professional. A total of $3,000 per building is available through this grant. UPTOWN SIGNAGE GRANT This grant was created by the Uptown BID to help property owners within in the district with rehabilitation, repair or replacement of signs. Any exterior sign proposal, from sign rehabilitation and repair to the replacement of an inappropriate sign, is eligible for funding. However, top priority will be given to projects that will make a highly visible contribution to the Uptown Bid District. A total of $1,000 per building is available through this grant. COMMERCIAL RENT ASSISTANCE GRANT This grant was created to facilitate the establishment of desired business types within specific geographic zones to help establish retail critical mass/ cluster areas within the district. Approved recipients may be eligible for up to one-third of the business’s monthly rent, up to $300 per month, for a 12-month period of a two-year lease. PERMIT REIMBURSEMENT GRANT The purpose of this grant is to reimburse businesses in the targeted Uptown areas for costs incurred in securing the requisite permits needed for business development. Those permits may include conditional use permits, occupancy permits, signage permits, food service permits, etc. Recipients may receive a grant up to $1,000. MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS GRANT The Uptown BID’s 1:1 matching grant program was established as an incentive for critical exterior maintenance and repair of commercial buildings within the district. The program makes available a business development incentive to commercial building owners, leaseholders and developers within the district. The maximum grant is $1,000 for eligible repairs such as exterior restoration and painting, window and door repair or restoration, and visible masonry repairs.The Uptown BID board established a 1:1 matching grant program as an incentive for critical exterior maintenance and repairs of commercial buildings within the district. The program makes available a new business development incentive to commercial building owners, leaseholders and developers within the district. This program was established to enhance the physical appearance of some of Racine’s commercial corridors. The program provides matching funds up to $10,000.00 to commercial property owners to assist them in restoring their façades. The application for a façade grant may be found at Lighting Grant This grant was created by the Uptown BID to help property owners in the district improve the safety and security of the area through the installation of additional exterior lighting.
