The Waterford High School wrestling team had five champions and three runners-up Saturday and opened its tournament season by finishing second in the 11-team Cougar Invitational at Campbellsport.

The Wolverines totaled 218.5 points to finish second behind Waunakee (243). Case had four top-six finishes and finished seventh with 61 points.

The highlight for Waterford coach Tom Fitzpatrick was the championship by Boyd Biggs at 285 pounds. Biggs had two first-period pins in his first two matches, then rallied from a 5-2 deficit after two periods in the title match for a 6-5 victory over Alan Olkowski of Waunakee, a state qualifier last year.

“He won it with heart,” Fitzpatrick said.

Joshua Cherba (113 pounds), Sam Winski (120) and Jared Krattiger (182) remained unbeaten in winning their titles. Cherba, a freshman, won 10-5 over Drake Hayward of Neenah, Winski won 14-3 over Berhett Statz of Waunakee and Krattiger pinned Luke Hooker of Waunakee in 2:41 in their respective title matches.

The fifth champion was Cherba’s sophomore brother Jacob, who pinned Darrius Curtis of West Bend West in 4:36.

Taking second for the Wolverines were Nick Goldammer (126), Anthony Christenson (152) and Jack Trautman (195).

The best finish for Case was fourth by Tim Rothan at 145 pounds.

BURLINGTON: The Demons had three champions, four runners-up and 11 top-six finishes overall and won the 16-team Gunslinger Invitational at Slinger.

Hayden Halter had the best day for Burlington, going 5-0 with four pins at 106 pounds. His first three pins each came in less than a minute.

Zach Weiler took first at 132 with one pin and two technical fall victories, and Nate Crayton (182) had two pins and two decisions.

Taking second for the Demons were Jake Skrundz (145), Ben Kumphrey (152), Zach Wallace (170) and Max Travis (220).

HORLICK: The Rebels followed up three losses at the Cramer-Brown Invitational at Janesville Parker with two victories behind undefeated Carlos Vega and Antonio Puentes.

Horlick beat Sussex Hamilton 36-34 and Milton 52-9. Puentes had four pins at 113 pounds and Vega had two at 106.

Also leading the Rebels (2-4) were Nick Cihler (4-1 at 145) and Ryan Kickland (4-1 at 170). Christian Ramirez (120) and Damon Young (195) both went 3-2 in their first varsity tournament.

PARK: The Panthers finished eighth in the Nicolet Knight Scramble with 70 points.

Joseph Mendoza was the top performer for Park, winning the title at 113 pounds. He had four victories and one bye, with two of his three pins coming in just over a minute.

Austin Siegal (160) and Michael Nielsen (182) each finished third for Park.

UNION GROVE: Cade Willis went 5-0 to lead the Broncos to 10th place in the Tom Manley Duals at East Troy.

Willis had four victories at 106 pounds and one at 113. His biggest victory was a 6-2 decision over Tommy Larson of East Troy in a 106 match. Larson finished sixth in Division 2 in the WIAA State Individual Tournament last year.

Union Grove beat Madison West 36-21 and Kenosha Indian Trail 36-24 in the 10th-12th place bracket.
