This weekend is a busy one for area wrestlers and gymnasts.
The WIAA Team Wrestling Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at the University of Wisconsin Field House in Madison, with Burlington a top contender for the Division 1 title.
The Demons (13-0 in dual meets), the fourth seed in the tournament, open tournament action at 5:30 p.m. Friday against unseeded Slinger (14-3) in one of the four Division 1 quarterfinals. The other quarterfinal matches are No. 1 seed Holmen (18-0) vs. Hartland Arrowhead (6-1), No. 3 Stoughton (21-1) vs. Marshfield (17-2) and No. 2 Kaukauna (20-1) vs. Mukwonago (13-3). Kaukauna is the four-time defending Division 1 champion.
The semifinals begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with the Burlington-Slinger winner taking on the Holmen-Arrowhead winner and the Stoughton-Marshfield winner going against the Kaukauna-Mukwonago winner. The Division 1 final is at 3 p.m. Saturday.
The Demons squad includes freshman Hayden Halter, who won a gold medal at 106 pounds at the WIAA state individual tournament last weekend at Madison.
The WIAA State Gymnastics Championships are Friday and Saturday at Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids.
Burlington Co-op will compete in the Division 1 team competition Friday for the seventh time, but for the first time since 2014. Team competition begins at 2 p.m.
In Saturday’s individual competition, the Demons’ Regan Cassidy and Malia Bronson vie for medals beginning at 11:15 a.m.
At the Waukesha Sectional last week, Cassidy, a sophomore, qualified in three events and the all-around, and Bronson, a freshman, qualified in the balance beam by winning the sectional title on the event. They are Burlington Co-op’s first individual state qualifiers since 2015.
Franklin/Muskego/Oak Creek/Whitnall, the Waukesha Sectional winner, has won the last two Division 1 state team titles.
