The Waterford High School wrestling team had a strong day at the WIAA Division 1 West Allis Central Regional Saturday and will be taking 10 wrestlers to next week’s New Berlin West/Eisenhower Sectional.
The Wolverines had five champions, two runners-up, a third-place finisher and two fourth-place finishers, and gave Mukwonago a run for the team title.
But Waterford, which reached the team state tournament last year, fell just short of a repeat trip. Mukwonago totaled 256 points to the Wolverines’ 223.5.
Waterford’s champions were Sam Winski at 120 pounds, Alex Guardiola at 152, Jared Krattiger at 182, Jack Trautmann at 195 and Boyd Biggs at 285, and four of the five dominated their title matches.
Guardiola (30-6) had the strongest finish, beating Kevin Pollack (36-4) of Greenfield on a technical fall in 2:41 (winning 16-0). Earlier in the season, Guardiola beat Pollack 5-1.
“He’s really stepping up,” Wolverines coach Tom Fitzpatrick said of Guardiola. “He’s doing what we had hoped.”
Winski (33-14) had one of three victories by major decision in his final, beating Alex Sino (33-12) of West Allis Hale 11-1.
“Sam’s starting to gain confidence and he’s wrestling a lot better,” Fitzpatrick said.
Krattiger (43-1) and Trautman (41-3) were their usual selves in their finals, Fitzpatrick said. Krattiger beat Tyler Larsen (39-6) of Muskego 16-4 and Trautman beat Dustin Diebitz (29-6) of West Allis Central 12-3.
“Jared was being Jared and Jack is betting better and better,” Fitzpatrick said.
The closest final was at 285, where Biggs (33-10) toughed out a 2-1 victory over Tim Seymour (23-8) of Central. After a scoreless first period, Seymour led 1-0 after the second. In the third, Biggs picked up an escape and got another point on a stalling call against Seymour.
“Boyd has been consistent all year and is not getting the recognition he deserves,” Fitzpatrick said. “He’s a tough competitor and he never goes down without a fight.”
Joshua Cherba (25-17 at 113) and Tony Mastrocola (23-14 at 220) finished second.
Cherba lost to Parker Bevilacqua (33-11) of Muskego in the first-place match and won by rule over Jacob Christensen (18-14) of Greenfield in the second-place wrestleback after beating Christensen 12-4 in the semifinals.
Mastrocola lost to defending 220 state champion Aric Bohn in the semifinals and wrestled back to second place, pinning Peter Garcia (12-7) of Central in 1:52.
Taking third was Zach Kaminski (21-17 at 160) and finishing fourth were Jacob Cherba (17-20 at 138) and Anthony Christenson (30-14 at 145).
