The Racine Lutheran High School boys basketball team lost a big lead in its season-opening loss to Wilmot Tuesday night.

It was a different story 48 hours later, when the Crusaders overcame a slow start to defeat Milwaukee Carmen 85-70 Thursday in a nonconference game at Milwaukee.

“We did a great job of passing, and getting the ball into the middle of their defense and we got some easy baskets,” Lutheran coach Jeff Christensen said.

The Crusaders took a 51-30 lead into halftime and did not look back.

Senior guard Ryan Hoover filled the stat sheet with 29 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. In two games this season, Hoover has 55 points, 18 rebounds and 12 assists.

Christensen also praised the play of freshman guards Brady Wilks and Jackson Woodward, who handled the ball well and contributed great passing. Woodward scored eight points and Woodward had five.

BROOKFIELD ACADEMY 87, CASE 83: The Eagles battled, but came up just short in the opening round of the Hank Raymonds Holiday Classic at Milwaukee Pius XI.

Case will play host Pius at 3 p.m. Saturday in the consolation game.

The Eagles (0-3) overcame an 18-point deficit with 10 minutes to play, and had a 3-point shot to win, but could not convert.

“We had our chance to win, but just could not make the shot, and their last second free throws sealed the game,” Eagles coach Jacob Berce said. “But I am very proud of how the boys battled back. Our defense was much better in the second half.”

The Eagles were led by freshman guard JaKobe Thompson with 22 points.

Berce also praised the defensive play of JayVian Farr and Jaylon Edmondson who stepped up and made a difference defensively in second half.
