There looks to be a changing of the guard in Southern Lakes Conference wrestling.

The Waterford High School wrestling team won the final four matches, capping the meet with a pair of pins, and beat defending SLC champion Elkhorn 47-27 at Waterford in the season opener for both teams.

The Wolverines, who advanced to the WIAA Division 1 State Team Tournament last year, and the Elks battled back and forth in the first 10 matches and were tied 27-27.

Dalton Danowski started the final run for Waterford, getting an escape in the final 10 seconds of the 170-pound match for a 7-6 victory over Aaron Taylor.

Jared Krattiger, who finished third at 182 pounds at the WIAA State Individual Tournament last year, followed with a technical fall over Myles Schumaker in 5:01.

Tony Mastrocola (195) and Jack Trautman (220), who was third at 195 at state last year, finished with respective pins of Nathan Welsh in 1:42 and Dakota Biefield in 2:43.

“We won the close ones, and that’s what you have to do,” Waterford coach Tom Fitzpatrick said. “We won some good matches and overall it was a great first dual meet.”

The Wolverines picked up an unusual victory at 138 pounds, where Keegan Northrop beat Daniel Stilling on a disqualification. Stilling, who finished fifth at 132 at state last year, unintentionally slammed Northrop on his back and head, Fitzpatrick said, and Northrop went to the hospital as a precaution.

Joshua Cherba (113), Sam Winski (120) and Anthony Christenson (152) also had pins for Waterford, and Nick Goldammer (126) won a 4-3 decision.
