Waterford High School senior runner Josh Butscher becoming a force in Racine County cross country.
Butscher had a big time drop Friday at the Wolverine Invitational at Waterford, lowering his personal 5,000-meter record by 15 seconds to 16:18.69 to finish second in the boys race and help the Wolverines finish second with 59 points.
In his previous meet, the Mukwonago Invitational Sept. 28, Butscher finished in 16:33.6. His best time last year was 16:44.8.
Rachel Anderson, St. Catherine’s
St. Catherine’s High School senior Rachel Anderson made it a four-peat for the WIAA State Tournament Wednesday.
Anderson earned her fourth straight trip to the State Individual Girls Tennis Tournament, and second automatic berth, by winning her first match on an unseasonably hot day at the Division 2 Whitewater Sectional.
Anderson, who is 25-5, lost the first set to Morgan Graf of Jefferson, but came back to win the match 1-6, 6-3 10-3.
Anderson begins state play Thursday.
Catholic Central girls volleyball
The Lady Toppers did two things last week they haven’t done since 2008.
Thursday, Catholic Central won its first conference title in nine years, beating Prairie 19-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 in a Metro Classic Conference match at Burlington.
Grace Spiegelhoff had 17 kills, a .395 hitting percentage and 24 digs to lead the Lady Toppers, who are unbeaten (7-0) in MCC play. Prairie, Catholic Central’s closest pursuer, is 6-2 in the MCC.
Last Tuesday, the Lady Toppers beat St. Catherine’s for the first time since 2008.
