Minus two of his backfield mates, Tanner Keller left the memory of an ugly defeat in his dust.

The sophomore afforded the Waterford High School football team a big lead with three touchdown runs, and the defense closed out Wilmot 24-13 in Friday's Southern Lakes Conference game at Waterford.

A week after a 38-21 loss to Lake Geneva Badger, the Wolverines (2-2, 1-1 SLC) made a quick revival. Keller scored on runs of 3, 57 and 47 yards, and they raced ahead 24-0 in the third quarter.

"When he gets in space, he's hard to bring down," Waterford head coach Adam Bakken said of the sophomore, who totaled 167 yards on 15 rushes.

Bakken also credited the offensive line's blocking for the trio of Keller, Dominic Miller and Alex Guardiola, who combined for 259 yards on the ground. Ben Michalowski and Zak Slusar, two seniors in the running back rotation who also play linebacker, missed the game with injuries.

Aaron Chapman and Will Ketterhagen intercepted passes for the Wolverines. Bakken also pointed to a strong defensive game from Dan Noll and Jack Trautman III in the front seven.

Waterford's defense made Wilmot work for two irrelevant scores, both of which came in the final 13 minutes.

"They had to use a lot of clock to get those touchdowns," Bakken said.
