For the second straight game, defense allowed the Racine Lutheran High School girls basketball team to open up a lead at halftime.

This time, it was enough for the Crusaders to win.

Lutheran held St. Catherine’s to just 13 points in the first half and held on in the second half for a 58-50 victory over the Angels in a Metro Classic Conference game at Lutheran.

“We played great defense,” Crusaders coach Steve Shaffer said. “In the last two games, our first-half defense has been outstanding. In the second half, we didn’t quite have that intensity.

“But give St. Catherine’s credit — they didn’t quit and they made some tough shots.”

The Crusaders (3-1, 1-1 MCC) led Kenosha St. Joseph at halftime Friday night before losing 58-50. This time, the Angels (2-3, 1-2) went on a little run to get back in the game, but Lutheran held on.

Caroline Strande had 18 of her 27 points in the first half as Lutheran took a 30-13 halftime lead. Post players Morgann Gardner and Jackie Kellner added 11 and eight points, respectively.

Molly O’Regan and Analysa Ortiz each had nine points and Molly O’Brien had eight for St. Catherine’s.
