St. Catherine’s High School graduate Andy Podolak is still alive in the WPGA Match Play Championship after winning two matches Tuesday at The GC’s of Lawsonia course in Green Lake.
Podolak, the head golf pro at Fire Ridge in Grafton, beat John Freeman of Edgewood Golf Club 4 and 3 in a second-round match, then defeated Thomas Burton of the Wisconsin Club in 19 holes to advance to the final eight.
Two other entrants with Racine ties lost in the second round on Tuesday.
Jason Samuelian, a Horlick High School graduate and general manager, director of operations and golf pro at the Meadowbrook Country Club, lost to Eddie Terasa of North Hills Country Club in 20 holes.
Charlie Brown, another Horlick graduate and the second assistant at the Tuckaway Country Club in Franklin, lost to Jim Schuman of Blue Mound Golf and Country Club 1 up.
The remaining three rounds of matches will take place in the summer months, according to WPGA officials.
USGA OPEN: Park High School graduate Bendt Bendtsen III tied for first at the local qualifying for the USGA Open at Whistling Straits in Sheboygan.
Bendtsen carded a 2-under par 70 and tied him with Peter Webb from Madison. The top five finishers qualified for stroke play along with two alternates.
Other finishers with Racine ties were Daniel Conti of Mount Pleasant (81), Paul Koszarek of Waterford (86) and Eric Van Tubbergen of Racine (91).
