The UW-Parkside softball team earned a doubleheader split Saturday against St. Cloud State to finish 1-3 on its weekend trip to the Husky Dome to start the season.
Parkside won the first game 8-6 but lost the second game 1-0. On Friday, Parkside lost both games of a doubleheader against Upper Iowa.
The Rangers’ 8-6 victory over St. Cloud State was their first over the Huskies since 2008. Parkside scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning, highlighted by Morgan Sikon’s two-run double, to take an 8-1 lead.
St. Cloud battled back with two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings and had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with the winning run at first base, but Alyssa Hrncar got a strikeout to end the game and give the Rangers their first win of the season.
Kellie Fenza led the Rangers, going 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs and also scored three runs.
In the second game, the Rangers were shut out on three hits.
On Friday, Upper Iowa beat Parkside 3-2 and 7-0. Jessica Shields went 3 for 4 with an RBI in the first game to lead the Rangers and Megan Aliverti had two of the Rangers’ three hits in the second game.
Track & field
PARKSIDE: In their final home meet of the indoor season, the Parkside men’s team earned a second-place finish while the women’s team placed third at the 2018 Parkside Classic in the Petretti Fieldhouse.
The men’s team had five event winners: Tavian Stewart won the 200-meter dash and long jump, Rhashad Gray won the 55-meter dash, Trevaughn Brown won the high jump and the 4x400 relay team placed first.
Jada Williams and Kaila McLaurin went 1-2 in the 200-meter dash to lead the way for the women. McLaurin won the 400, while former Park High School standout Amanda Johnson won the mile run. Grace Bitangalo won the long jump for the second straight meet.
