Carthage College junior Sarah Lyman got a little help from Mother Nature Saturday en route to winning medalist honors in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Women’s Golf Championship.
Heavy rain Saturday afternoon at Prairie Landing Golf Club in West Chicago washed out the third and final round of the tournament, making Lyman the winner.
Lyman had shot 76 and 73 Thursday and Friday, respectively, in the first two days of the tournament. Her 149 total held up for an eight-stroke victory over Jordan Koehler (78-79-157) of Illinois Wesleyan.
Lyman became the first Carthage medalist since Kayla Meyer in 2015 and the fourth CCIW medalist in program history.
Illinois Wesleyan won its 14th CCIW title and earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship May 8-11, 2018. Illinois Wesleyan had a 36-hole team total of 633.
Carthage finished second with a 36-hole total of 653. Carlee Dawson was 13th individually with a 165 total.
PARKSIDE: Senior Haley Willis covered the 6,000 meters course in 24:01.0 to place 25th overall and lead the UW-Parkside women at the UW-Parkside Lucian Rosa Invitational on Saturday on the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course on the Parkside campus in Somers.
Willis was one of three Parkside runners to place in the top 30. Sophomore Rebecca Jasutis was 29th in 24:15.8 and senior Monica Geiser was 30th in 24:18.2.
Former Parkside runner Moriah Palmer, running unattached, won the race in 22:17.6.
As a team, the Parkside women placed fourth with a score of 143. Wheaton won the women’s team title with a score of 32.
On the men’s side, junior Jimmy Funteas Jr. had the top finish for Parkside, placing 28th in 27:41.4 for the 8,000-meters race. Funteas was the only Parkside runner in the top 30.
Indiana Wesleyan won the team title with a score of 42. Parkside did not have a full team in the men’s race. Moses Dirane of Cloud County Community College won the race in 26:10.9.
CARTHAGE: The Red Men rallied for three goals and beat Silver Lake 4-3 in a nonconference match Friday at Art Keller Field on the Carthage campus in Kenosha.
Trailing 2-0, the Red Men (7-5-1) scored four straight goals. Richard Flores scored at 33:17 and 59:36 and Sahr Mahoney scored at 55:11 and 63:05.
Silver Lake (7-3-1) scored at 68:05 to pull within a goal.
Carthage outshot Silver Lake 26-6.
CARTHAGE: Megan Fallert had 15 kills and Megan Behrendt added 13 kills in leading the Lady Reds to a 25-9, 25-13, 30-28 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) victory over Carroll University at Kenosha.
Former St. Catherine’s High School standout Ellie LeCount had a team-high 45 assists and Luci Krenzke of Racine (Greenfield High School) had a team-high 18 digs.
