Wild Root Market’s mission is to enhance the economic vitality of our community through local cooperative ownership. Over 1,100 members of the community have purchased a share in the co-op and ownership will continue to grow. The cooperative approach to business generates a powerful economic force that benefits the co-op, its owners, and the community it serves.
Wild Root Market is opening a cooperatively owned store in a neighborhood where other chain stores have pulled out, providing a much needed resource. Wild Root Market’s investment in the local food system is a different investment than other grocers make. More of the money spent at Wild Root Market stays local compared to chain grocers and the co-op makes a stronger impact with $1 out of every $5 spent on local products.
Wild Root Market profits go back to owners of the co-op who patronize the business. That means more dollars recirculate in Racine, benefitting our city and the people who live here.
The owners of Wild Root Market will contribute $1.125M to the project. The city’s proposed investment of a maximum of $390,000 is required by their own policy to result in a 1:5 ratio of public to private investment. The proposed grant will result in private investment that far exceeds that requirement through payment of property taxes, investment in the building, purchase of equipment, and job creation. The financial benefit to our community far offsets the city’s proposed investment in the market, with returns to Racine for decades to come.
