I noticed in the paper the city is planning to spend up to $30 million to rebuild and update the safety building Downtown. Since such a considerable amount is being considered, I'd like to propose the city look at the old foundry site on Memorial Drive as a law enforcement complex.
The advantages are numerous. First, being on Memorial Drive, the police would have quick access to the north and south of town. Second, being adjacent to the juvenile detention center a sky walk could connect them. Third, having the brick wall around it, you would have an extra level of security.
Besides the fact that there is plenty of room to build a complex of law enforcement structures like squad car storage and maintenance, you would have room for offices, fire and rescue, detention, and safe parking.
Let's face it, this property has been unused for years and it's unlikely it ever will. It might even create a flurry of business activity across Memorial Drive for businesses associated with law enforcement. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we should make the best of it.
