RACINE - Starting Tuesday, a statewide effort to recall Republican Gov. Scott Walker is scheduled to start.
The Journal Times asked people Sunday in Downtown Racine and area coffee shops how they feel about the upcoming recall effort. A lot of people wanted to stay out of the debate and declined to give their names, but those who did share their thoughts had a wide variety of opinions.
If the effort starts as planned Tuesday, Walker opponents will have 60 days - until Jan. 13 - to collect 540,208 signatures.
Helen Alusic, 87, of Racine, a retired Racine Unified teacher's aide
"Recalls, I think negate, people's votes. I mean if you voted for Scott Walker and he gets recalled, my vote didn't count. It's ridiculous. Plus you pay for those recalls. It's not paid for by the people that want the recall."
Adam Gilboy, 23, of Racine, a musician and part time Panera Bread employee
"Get rid of him. He is a corporate stooge. The guy is trying to keep the rich, rich, and the poor, poor."
Margaux Meltzer, 23, of Caledonia, a cosmetologist at The Vine, 2932 Northwestern Ave.
"I have no opinion. Especially since I'm a cosmetologist ... I'd rather stay neutral."
Daniel Mich, 23, of Racine, recent UW-Madison grad looking for a job
"I definitely think it's a good idea for him to face a second (election) to make sure they support the decision they made. Since he has done such controversial things, it's not a bad idea for people to look back and say ‘Am I happy with the decision I made?' "
Sierrah Penniex, 16, of Racine, a sophomore at Case High School
She cannot vote yet, but she supports the recall and said, "I'm trying to talk to as many people as I can.
"What he is doing is not right." She said she has seen some of the effects at school. "They limit stuff." She said, for instance, the school has cut sour cream and Crystal Light.
Megan Williams, 21, of Mount Pleasant, a senior at UW-Parkside and writing tutor
"I don't support the recall. He was just trying to do what was right to balance the budget."
