MOUNT PLEASANT — Badger Meter has announced plans to move from 30-35 jobs from Scottsdale, Ariz., to Racine County.

The company plans to close its Scottsdale location and move the jobs to its existing plant, at 8635 Washington Ave., in Mount Pleasant, by March 31.

Most of these jobs will be for skilled technical assembly workers, manufacturing high-precision turbo meters. Many of these jobs will require a technical school degree.

Badger has offered some Scottsdale employees the opportunity to relocate to Racine, said Richard Meeusen, chairman, president and CEO of Badger Meter. He believes some of the employees will take advantage of that offer, but the company also plans to hire some local workers.

“It’s a very skilled workforce in Racine,” he said.

He added that the workers here have a classic Midwestern work ethic.

On average, Badger Meter’s employees make around $23 an hour. The starting pay rate is $15 an hour.

“These are good paying jobs,” Meeusen said.

The state’s passage of a right-to-work law in 2015, which prohibits contracts that require even non-union workers to pay union dues, played a part in the business’s decision to move jobs here.

“We probably would not have brought those jobs to Wisconsin if it was not a right-to-work state,” Meeusen said.

Although the company plans to expand the number of employees, it does not plan to expand its Mount Pleasant location, as it has extra square footage available.

The company informed its Scottsdale employees about the change around a month ago, Meeusen said.

To give Scottsdale employees time to make a decision, Badger Meter likely won’t start making new hires here until February.
