RACINE — A raccoon's contact with energy equipment knocked out power to thousands of We Energies's customers on the northwest side of Racine early Friday morning, a company spokeswoman confirmed.
The outage hit about 7,000 customers in Racine, Caledonia and Mount Pleasant at about 12:30 a.m, but over half of those customers only saw their power out for a moment, according to WE Energies spokeswoman Cathy Schulze.
She said about 3,000 customers were without power for about three hours while the equipment was repaired.
Schulze said the company report did not specify the boundaries of the outage, but she noted that the company received a high volume of calls during the night from areas around Northwestern Avenue, Erie Street, Douglas Avenue and 4 Mile Road.
Schulze could not immediately confirm how the raccoon had damaged equipment or if it survived the incident.
