RACINE - Eugene J. "Sparky" Makowka, 86, passed away after a short illness at Ridgewood Care Center on Wednesday, March 22, 2006.
Eugene was born in Lodz, Poland on July 12, 1919, to Jozef and Jozefa (nee: Musial) Makowka.
He served in the Polish Free Forces during WWII. He was in the 574th Tank Maintenance Brigade and was also a POW in Germany for three months. Following the war, he joined the British Army and traveled throughout the world for another 6 years. Eugene moved to the United States in 1952. Shortly thereafter he met the girl that was soon to be his wife, the former Josephine Konairski. They met at the dance hall at DeKoven and Mead Streets in Racine and were married for over 47 years.
She preceded him in death on January 11, 2000. Eugene "Sparky" worked for MGD Pneumatics for 10 years until he joined Racine Industries. He retired in 1994 after 22 years. Eugene spoke six languages. He enjoyed watching the History Channel and especially loved his dogs and cats.
Survivors include his children, Joseph (Kathleen) Makowka, Eugene "Ted" (Cindy) Makowka, Henryk (Colleen) Makowka and Christine (Danny) Makowka; grandchildren, Michael, Teresa, Leah, Stephanie, Kelsey and Matt; and his brother in Lodz, Poland, Marion (Helena) Makowka. Eugene is also survived by other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers.
In keeping with Eugene's wishes, cremation has taken place following a private service with his children and grandchildren. Memorials may be directed to Ridgewood Care Center.

and to Dr. James Matacynski and his nurse Mary for all of their care and compassion.
