WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama kept up pressure on Congress Monday to pass tough new gun legislation, seeking help from law enforcement leaders in three communities that have suffered the horrors of mass shootings.

At a White House meeting, Obama said that no group is more important in the gun debate and he said he recognizes the issue ``elicits a lot of passion all across the country.’’ But Obama also said he believes Congress will respond to appeals from police.

``Hopefully if law enforcement officials who are dealing with this stuff every single day can come to some basic consensus in terms of steps that we need to take,’’ he said, ``Congress is going to be paying attention to them, and we’ll be able to make progress.’’

The president’s meeting comes as he tries to build support for gun control legislation that will be difficult to get through Congress. He urged Congress to pass an assault weapons ban, limit high capacity magazines and require universal background checks.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina has indicated he will be using the power of the president’s still intact political organization to mobilize support for the legislation. Messina traveled to New York City last week to meet with aides to Mayor Michael Bloomberg at City Hall, according to a person familiar with the discussion, speaking on a condition of anonymity since the meeting was private. Bloomberg has tightened gun laws in the city and founded Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a coalition that now has more than 800 mayors pushing for national legislation.

Obama met in the Roosevelt Room with the heads of the Major Cities Chiefs Association and the Major County Sheriffs Association, members of his Cabinet and chiefs that responded to the worst shootings of 2012. That includes Aurora, Colo., where 12 were killed in July; Oak Creek, Wis., where six died in a Sikh temple assault: and Newtown, Conn., scene of the most recent mass tragedy that left 20 first-graders dead.

Obama also said that Washington needs to take mental health issues and school safety more seriously and should help law enforcement agencies hire more police, make sure they get the training they need and give rural forces the resources they need to deal with emergencies.

``Many of them also recognize that it’s not only the high profile mass shootings that are of concern here,’’ the president said. ``It’s also what happens on a day in day out basis in places like Chicago or Philadelphia where young people are victims of gun violence every single day.’’

Clarke is as right as right gets. It's our own responsibility to protect ourselves. Ted Nugent is right as well. The founding fathers did not create the second amendment to protect deer hunting. The bill of rights is to ensure we were free and not subject to the whims of the government. #1 is perhaps most important, followed by #2.

10rds, 30rds, 100rds, a bullet is a bullet is a bullet. A 10rd magazine or a "black rifle" does not make it less likely that homicidal maniacs will act. Nor does it make them less dangerous...which is perhaps the most ridiculous of all.

I know of no police officer that does not believe in the right to protect yourself. In fact, that is the premise of their carrying a firearm in the first place!!!!!!

If it was about buying votes we would always have republicans in office. And yes I am republican. If money really did talk it would show in elections. Instead uneducated voters have the majority. It's all about who can BS the stupid people that make up 80% of this world. Money, guns and freedom are now evil things according to Obama and his followers believe that. Sad thing is this country was founded on those same things that they want to take away. People don't want to hear the truth so instead we get a slick talker.

Millions applying for gun permits, guns and gun related products on months of back order. Thousands calling local police chiefs and sheriffs telling them to back Clarke. I'm pretty sure the people know where they stand on this issue. I think these elected officials forget we gave them the power they have. They're to listen to our voices not the other way around.

    I'm guessing Sheriff Clarke's opinion doesn't count.

I wrote congress and said "If you're going to go after the 2nd amendment, you better go after the entire Bill of Rights and following amendments because none are more important than the others".

The president fully understands the 2nd Amendment, but unfortunately he cannot come right out and say so. He has to pander to the anti gun lobby to show concern, yet in the final analysis he knows that gun control in the US is going no where fast. As a side bar to the issue, the NRA keeps getting hammered for their positions on gun ownership and gun rights. Diane Feinstein and others in Congress continuely point to the NRA as not taking into consideration the feelings of their membership over representing the firearms industry in the US. I did not know this until today. The National Shooting Sports Federation represents the gun manufacturers of the US and associated business interests of the shooting sports. They are the true gun lobby and they are never mentioned by anyone. Their corporate headquarters in located in Newtown, CT within a 1/2 mile of the school shooting.

I really cannot understand why they needed another meeting with law enforcement on this issue. If it was up to law enforcement they would like absolutely no guns to deal with on the streets, but that will not be possible. This is really all show and no go for the president. What he has asked for as it relates to gun control beyond his 23 executive orders he probably is not going to get. The Assault Weapons Ban is as bogus as it was in 1994. The criminals in the US sure are not going to obey any new laws and they sure do not obey the ones we already have. The issues that are driving the gun violence in our nation, which is poverty and mental health issues are the hardest to address and will get the least attention. Until something is done to treat the cause, the guns in the US are still needed for protection and this is really over and above the requirements of the 2nd Amendment, which is an all together different subject.

Law enforcement officers WANT us to be armed and protect ourselves. They KNOW they can't be everywhere. And they know that the new generations of criminals have no fear, guilt or boundaries. Take a class... learn how to shoot and handle a gun properly... and protect yourself.

I think Obama also has mental health issues. What part of the 2nd. Amendment does he not understand?

You can ignore the Bozo Obama. because the Supreme Court will reign him in.

His refusal to deal with the issues facing America is exactly like Dickerts inability to face the reality concerning Racine's finances. If Obama had a son - he would be exactly like Dishonest John.
