CALEDONIA — A man shot himself in the hand Saturday morning at The Shooters’ Sports Center Inc., a gun store and shooting range at 4900 6 Mile Road, according to Officer Matt Vannucci of the Caledonia Police Department.

Police were called to Shooters’ at 11:30 a.m. for a man accidentally shot in the hand with a .45-caliber handgun, Vannucci said.

“He explained he had a malfunction with the firearm, was trying to fix it and in the process of fixing it shot himself in the hand,” he said.

The 43-year-old man, of the Racine area, was taken to Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints hospital, 3801 Spring St., with non-life-threatening injuries. No one else was injured in the incident, Vannucci said. He declined to release the man’s name.

Vannucci said police calls to Shooters’ are rare.

“They operate quite a safe facility,” he said.

A Shooters’ representative reached Sunday declined to comment on the incident and said the establishment’s owners also had no comment.

The also cited cost savings. Way to ignore that. And the safety concerns are most likely related to the fact that the current facility isn't designed for intensive police training.

If they operate such a safe facility, why does area law enforcement agencies feel the need to build a new members only gun club in Mt. Pleasant and are citing safety concerns?
