MOUNT PLEASANT — An older white male was found dead in a field Sunday after he committed suicide, according to Mount Pleasant Police Department Sgt. David Stroupe.
The man’s body was found in a field at the northeast corner of Kinzie Avenue and Mariner Drive around 12 p.m. Houses stand across the street and residents had called police after hearing a gunshot, Stroupe said.
Khalid Oates was among those residents. Oates, 18, lives on Kinzie across from the field and said he and two others were outside when they saw the now-deceased man walking toward Kinzie on Mariner.
“He stopped at the corner. We walked into our garage and then we heard ‘POW’ and I was like, ‘That was a gunshot,’” Oates said.
He and the others walked back outside and saw the man’s body lying on the ground.
“My cousin was like, ‘Khalid, get some gloves and see if he’s OK,’” Oates said. He got gloves while his cousin called police. Oates then walked toward the body and saw the man had a gunshot wound to his head and a gun cradled in his left hand, he said.
“In my head I was just thinking, ‘What is this world coming to?’” said Oates, who just graduated from Case High School.
Police and the Racine County Medical Examiner’s Office have not released an official cause of death though Stroupe did say the incident was definitely a suicide. More details, including the man’s name, should be available Monday, pending family notification, Stroupe said.
