RACINE - Starting Monday, the city will skip collecting garbage and recycling on city holidays, per 2012 budget cuts.
Before, if a collection day fell on a holiday, collections were delayed for a day the rest of that week. Now, starting with pickup on New Year's Day observed on Monday, your garbage and recycling will be collected on the next regularly scheduled collection day.
So for residents whose collection day is Monday, don't put out your garbage and recycling next week. Your next garbage pickup will be Jan. 9 and recycling on Jan. 16, per your otherwise regular schedule. If your recyclables don't all fit in the recycling cart, city officials recommended getting blue plastic recycling bags from grocery or hardware stores.
For residents whose collection day is not Monday, don't forget to put out your garbage and recycling on your regular pickup day as you normally do on non-holiday weeks, not a day after like you used to.
The changes are a part of the 2012 budget the City Council adopted in November with cuts to services including street maintenance, buses and Humble Park funding.
The discontinued holiday collection was expected to save the city about $100,000 in overtime and gas, according to the city.
