RACINE — Jazz band students at Horlick High School had the opportunity to learn from one of the best during a special guest appearance on Oct. 20.
Carl Allen, a Milwaukee native who is a drummer with international acclaim, paid the class a visit to work with them on technique and sound. Allen has performed with numerous jazz legends, including Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. He also served on the faculty of the Juilliard School of Music from 2001-2014.
“Every generation needs someone to help them get to the next level and this what I am hoping to do,” Allen said.
Allen worked with Horlick High School’s jazz musicians teaching them about melody and harmony and talking about the importance of practicing their craft.
